Why do we need specialty brushes?
Each tooth is very unique. Some teeth have concavities and surface irregularities. A standard toothbrush will not reach all the surfaces of the tooth.
When two teeth are side by side, the it is not easy to tuck the bristles of the toothbrush into the sulcus or the gum line.
The size of the interdental brush is determined by the size of each gap between the teeth. If a patient has about 28 teeth then he or she will have 26 gaps.
Technique is important
